The North Caucasus and Russia's Invasion of Ukraine
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has had obvious effects on the North Caucasus. For example, reports indicate that Chechen forces have taken part in the fighting from the early days of the war and are now engaged near Kursk. Furthermore, the “Russian Special Forces University named after Vladimir Putin,” located in the city of Gudermes, was set on fire by a Ukrainian drone attack late last year. However, many of the war’s effects have not been as obvious.
Please join the Kennan Institute as we host a panel discussion featuring three experts on the North Caucasus, Dr. Marat Ilyasov, Christine Le Jeune, and Dr. Jean-Francois Ratelle. They will examine the hidden effects on the North Caucasus of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and elaborate on what they look for to understand the changes happening in the region.
